What is gastroenterology?

Gastroenterologists treat disorders of the digestive tract, which includes the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon, pancreas, gallbladder, bile ducts and liver. Gastroenterologists treat a variety of diseases and conditions, such as colon cancer, hepatitis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and others.

What gastroenterological conditions does a specialty pharmacy treat?

Amber Pharmacy dispenses medications to treat Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and inflammatory bowel disease. We also dispense medications for hepatitis and cancer

What treatments are available?

Some gastroenterological conditions have no cure but there are treatments and medications to make them more manageable. Your doctor will discuss which treatment options are best for you.

How do I manage the side effects of treatment?

Depending on the medication your doctor prescribes, you may experience side effects. Medication can affect each patient differently. Amber Pharmacy works with patients to help manage any side effects that occur. It’s important to discuss any side effects that you experience with your pharmacist or doctor early.

What are safe medication injection techniques?

Depending on what your doctor prescribes, you may have to inject your medication at home. If so, your pharmacy will review injection techniques with you. Standard injection techniques include:

  1. Clean the injection site.
  2. Let the skin dry.
  3. Pinch or stretch the skin (depending on your medication and injection site).
  4. Take a deep breath to relax.
  5. Insert the needle using a quick dart-like motion.
  6. Inject the medication.
  7. Wait to withdraw the needle until all of the medication is injected.
  8. Once you withdraw the needle, gently apply pressure with a sterile swab.
  9. Apply a Band-Aid.
  10. Properly dispose of used needles/syringes.
  11. Document that you took your medication.

Each medication has its own special considerations and instructions that your pharmacist will go over with you. If you have questions about your injection technique, be sure to ask your pharmacist.
